Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the Requiem Mass in D minor (K. 626) in Vienna in 1791. It was left unfinished at the composer's death and thus has become one of the most enigmatic pieces of music composed - mostly because of the myths and controversies surrounding it. Franz Xaver Süssmayr completed the score and deliverd it to Count Franz von Walsegg. Walsegg had anonymously commissioned the Requiem Mass to commemorate the anniversary of his wife's death. Already in ill health by the time he took the commission, Mozart confided to his wife that he felt certain he was writing the piece for his own funeral.
